Welcome to the Northern Ireland
Institute of Licensed Accreditation (NIILA)

The Northern Ireland Institute of Licensed Accreditation NIILA assesses and certifies the following types of Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) to the relevant international standards:

  • Certification bodies for management systems [EN ISO/IEC 17021-1]
  • Certification bodies for persons [EN ISO/IEC 17024]
  • Certification bodies for quality management systems (QMS) [EN ISO/IEC 9001]
  • Certification bodies for products, processes and services [EN ISO/IEC 17065]

What is the aim of accreditation?

Accreditation officially certifies that a particular body has the necessary ability to carry out conformity assessments in accordance with specified requirements. The term “accreditation” is derived from the Latin word “accreditare” and means “to give credence to”. This already emphasises the high value and trust that goes hand in hand with accreditation.

The main objective of accreditation is to strengthen confidence in the competence and services of accredited CABs (conformity assessment bodies). Successful accreditation confirms that a CAB has demonstrable expertise, technical skills and resources to carry out objective assessments. This reduces uncertainties for customers or partners and at the same time creates transparency.

An accredited CAB is therefore characterised by the fact that it can carry out independent conformity assessments. These assessments can take place as part of certification processes or test procedures, for example. All relevant requirements must be fulfilled – whether at national or international level.

However, the importance of accreditation does not only extend to individual organisations or companies. It also plays an important role for trade between countries and for the protection of consumers and the environment. This is because reliable accreditation ensures that products or services meet the applicable standards and are therefore safe for users.

Accreditation also has an impact on the reputation of a CAB. It serves as proof of its quality and expertise to customers, partners and government authorities. Successful accreditation is therefore often an important competitive advantage for companies, as it demonstrates their reliability and professionalism.

To summarise, it can be said that accreditation makes a significant contribution to strengthening confidence in accredited conformity assessment bodies. Objective assessments according to defined requirements reduce uncertainties and create transparency. The importance of accreditation extends beyond individual organisations and contributes to the protection of consumers, trade between countries and the reputation of companies.

What are the advantages of accreditation?

The reports and certificates issued as part of an accreditation are of great importance for confidence in the quality of products and services. They serve to remove technical barriers to trade and thus facilitate international trade. By being recognised abroad, they make a significant contribution to strengthening trust.

The Irish accreditation system in particular plays an important role in creating a transparent and competent infrastructure for all CAB specialisms. It ensures that companies from Ireland can be recognised as reliable providers on an international level.

The accreditation reports and certificates ensure that products or services fulfil certain quality standards. This not only increases customer confidence in these offerings, but also provides a clear competitive advantage over competitors without the corresponding evidence.

Furthermore, recognition abroad promotes the export of Irish products and services. If a product or service is labelled with an accredited certificate, this signals high quality and reliability of the manufacturing process to potential buyers abroad.

The Irish accreditation system therefore plays a key role in enabling Irish companies to operate successfully worldwide. It ensures that they fulfil international requirements and standards and therefore have access to global markets.

Overall, the Irish accreditation system is an important building block for the removal of technical barriers to trade. Thanks to its transparent and competent infrastructure, it enables companies from various specialised areas of CAB to successfully offer their products and services at home and abroad. Confidence in the quality of the offerings is strengthened, which ultimately leads to improved competitiveness.
